A Contemporary Cortijo
The brief was clear: create a home that pays homage to the traditional Andalusian cortijo, a farmhouse centered around an internal courtyard. But this was no ordinary commission. The clients, an Argentinian polo player and his Filipina wife, sought a space that reflected their love for the sport and the stunning landscape.
What makes this project particularly fascinating is the architects' approach to reinterpretation. They took the essence of the cortijo and infused it with a contemporary twist, resulting in a harmonious blend of old and new. The low-slung profile and earthy color palette, inspired by the surrounding soil, ensure the house blends seamlessly with its environment.
A House of Many Faces
One thing that immediately stands out is the clever use of space. Instead of a traditional courtyard layout, the architects designed eight interlocking volumes, each serving a unique purpose. This design choice creates a dynamic flow, with terraces dedicated to different activities throughout the day. From morning coffee to evening dinners, each space captures the essence of its purpose.
The public areas, including a spacious sitting room and an open hallway, face east, capturing the morning light and offering breathtaking views of the polo fields. Meanwhile, the dining room, kitchen, and a generous terrace face west, providing a front-row seat to stunning sunsets. It's as if the house itself is alive, responding to the daily rhythms of its inhabitants.

Adorned with a mural of locally crafted, hand-painted tiles, it serves as a bridge between the interior and exterior worlds.
