Soma Peppermint Hot Chocolate
It is our yearly tradition to go to a local Christmas tree farm to cut down our tree for Christmas. We love the fresh smell of the real tree and the task of hunting, cutting and hauling this tree home.
As soon as we arrive home with our tree, I head to the kitchen to start making hot chocolate for all. The kids and my husband set up the tree and begin decorating and soon I serve them this yummy cup of cacao.
I created this recipe to be both nutritious and delicious because I simply believe the two must exist or it is not worth indulging! I have to tell you that homemade hot chocolate is a unique cup of goodness and worth the time to slow down and make.
Here is our family recipe to help you start your own traditions in your home. We love peppermint and so our recipe is made with peppermint essential oil, but feel free to omit that if you like a plain cup of chocolate. Hope you enjoy it!
4 Cups Raw Whole Milk (or Califia Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk for dairy free)
1 Cup Raw Organic Cacao Powder
1/4 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 Cup Maple Syrup (can add more for desired sweetness)
2 Droppers of Trader Joe’s Organic Liquid Stevia (can add more to desired sweetness)
1-2 Drops of Peppermint Essential Oil (optional)
- Heat up the milk to a warm temperature on the stove.
- Add in the cacao powder while slowly stirring until melted.
- Add in the vanilla, cinnamon and maple syrup while stirring.
- If it reaches a boil, reduce heat to low and continue stirring
- Add in stevia and peppermint drops (no more than 2!) and continue string.
- Turn heat off and let sit for a few minutes
- Pour in mugs and enjoy!
Note: What is great about this recipe is that you can add more sweetness by increasing the maple or stevia. You can also make it dairy free by using almond milk or make it a plain cup of chocolate by omitting the peppermint. You can tweak this to make it your own desired delicious flavor! So slow down and enjoy this cup of goodness!
