Kimberly’s Summer 2018 Plans + Ideas for your Summer!

The countdown is here! We are weeks away from Summer and I am so excited! My family and I have been on a healing journey for many reasons with many stories and I  am looking forward to a new schedule that will continue this journey ahead.

The last 6 months have been filled with intentional shifts for us as a family. We desire so much for our children as well as my husband and I to flourish: emotionally, spiritually, physically and mentally. We have taken intentional steps for each of us and tried many new things.

We are so thankful for the journey we have been on, even with its pain. Pain is part of healing, part of freedom and part of growth. I am honestly thankful for pain.

As we head towards Summer, I wanted to share with you some things we are going to be intentionally doing and let you peek into my personal life a bit. I also have written a blog about 40+ ideas for Summer that offer ideas for your whole family! Check it out here. Click on underlined words to find more info about what we are doing this summer!

Summer 2018 Plans

Travel and Museums

The Legacy Museum: We are heading to visit family and friends this Summer in Atlanta and Memphis and will be stopping by this museum. Author of Just Mercy , Bryan Stevenson, is a MUST READ for the Summer! We are so thankful for the Equal Justice Initiative and the work they are doing to tell the true narrative of slavery and incarceration in our countries DNA fabric. It is only by listening to the true narrative of origin of our own country that we too will find freedom.

We will also be escaping the heat here in Texas with friends in COLORADO! We are so grateful to friends who make travel possible. We will attempt to climb MOUNT QUANDARY.

When we get to Memphis, we are heading to the National Civil Rights Museum. We used to live in Memphis and this city has shaped much of who me and my husband are today. We are looking forward to taking our 4 kids through this difficult but true narrative at the museum.

Physical Health

We are going to SLOW DOWN and try MORE VEGGIES this Summer. The school year is hectic and it is hard to try new things. The Summers allow us to slow our pace, rest more and consider what changes or additions we need to care for ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. We will also be SLEEPING more!

Reflection and Reading

We are going to JOURNAL and READ this Summer! Part of slowing down is reflecting and my kids and I will be journaling over the Summer for the purpose of reflection, healing and remembering. Get a cool, personalized journal here!

I am so excited to read these books: I’m Still Here by Austin Channing Brown, Motherless Mothers by Hope Edelman, Gaza in Crisis by Noam Chomsky and Hinds feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard.

My kids are reading: Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, Manga books, The Harry Potter Series, Screwtape Letters, Old Yeller, The Chronicles of Narnia Series and Letters to a Birmingham Jail

One of our favorite places is the Austin Public Library. Check out your local library for fun away from the heat and to load up on books for your summer! Our favorite Austin Library is the Carver Library in East Austin next to the Carver Museum. This Summer we are creating our own “stewart book club” to promote reading where they will be rewarded with legos!

Growth and Local Engagement

Our youngest son is Haitian American. It can be challenging to be in a family that doesn’t look like you and we are thankful to many people of color who mentor us through this and help us as his parents guide him in becoming a confident man of color who feels dignity and worth and value each day. Higher Learning is a Saturday program that helps kids of color see their worth and value and own their beautiful story.

Karisha Community Clinic is a future Austin Clinic bringing food, medicine and health for all. These health providers have graciously let me sit with them at the table where I get to learn and use my gifts to support their work ahead. I am so thankful to see what the work from this Summer brings for the Fall.

For the City Network and Verge are close to our hearts here in the City of Austin. My husband works day and night to use his gifts and is daily humbled at the opportunities to serve through these spaces everyday.

Hikes, farms and pools will also be part of our local fun on weeks we are not traveling.

This summer we will be celebrating 4 of our 6 birthdays! I will be 41, my oldest daughter will turn 12, our youngest son will be 11 and our littles Stewart Little will turn 10. We love celebrating our lives, looking forward and behind to bring sentimental and intentional reflection to the people we are becoming!

You can check out my friend, Jamie Ivey’s fun podcast where she and I and our friend Laura discussed birthdays way back when the podcast first started. Add her podcast and book to your Summer list!

What are you doing this Summer?? Remember to intentionally set a pace, goals and ways to care for you and others as your schedule changes over the Summer.
