4 Easy Ways to Boost Your Family’s Immune System (and Vitamin C is not one of them)

Fall is here and kids have started back to school. For me, new clients start signing up and our family takes on a whole new shift. I thrive off of routine and so does my family.

With new routines, come new forced habits good and bad. I have to (get to) pack lunches again and still strive to slow down even though the train is taking off at an incredible speed. I like to be prepared, but sometimes it is only after the train takes off that I can see more clearly.

Taking care of my kids immune system has been one of those things I have seen more clearly after a bad year of illness. When it comes to illness, it is not so much that you want to avoid it altogether, but rather how to support the body to fight illness in its strongest form.

With 4 kids of my own and clients who are always asking about supplements and immunity, I decided to take a year and search out what I would settle on when it came to helping my family’s health be at its best.

Here are 4 resources that I have seen drastically reduce illness in our home.

 1. Cod Liver Oil

Yes, you read right. Cod liver oil is one of the best forms or Vit A and D out there. It also carries a high amount of DHA and EPA that are not found in most supplements. Cod Liver Oil has been used for years dating back to the 1700’s.  I use this extra virgin cod liver oil to support my kids brain, stress levels and organ functions.

We use 2-4 ml per kid every other day.  I take 5 ml every other day. I would offer 3 mini DF chocolate chips when I first introduced it to my kids and water to drink after. I start them on 1 ml and work them up to 2-4 ml. Now, my kids can take it without any problem. Don’t be afraid to start slow. This oil is worth the investment and effort to make a weekly routine.

When it comes to cod liver oil, you can not just purchase it off of a shelf. You will risk buying rancid oil that will not work. Read more about cod liver oil testing and bottling here. If you are interested in a podcast from the owner of Corganics, I recommend this helpful interview from Jubilee Health.

2. Probiotics

There is a lot of information on probiotics out there these days. You may even have them in your fridge because you took them for an illness or just thought they would be good to have on hand. Probiotics are strains of good microorganisms that are beneficial for many things in our body.

Many people will buy yogurt because it is advertised as full of “live bacteria”. But not everyone can eat dairy and often, there is more sugar in the yogurt and not even worth eating.

My family and I choose a probiotic supplement from a reliable source were there is a multi-strain and it is still “live” once it gets in my home. One of our favorites is Klaire Labs.

Jubilee Health has some great probiotic recommendations. Others we have used are flora synergy and Jarrow. It is good to switch brands every 6-9 months. We usually switch probiotics at the new year and at the new school year. (Jan/Sept)  My kids take these daily when they are sick and at least 4 out of 7 days during the week.

3. Bone Broth

Bone broth is a staple in our home year round. It contains the minerals and foundational nutrients to help aid in gut health and immune support. If you want to choose one of these to start with, I would start here!

Make it a part of your weekly routine and incorporate it into your meals. When my kids are sick, we eliminate other foods and focus on a cup of this for each meal. Bone broth can feel overwhelming at first, but I promise it is easy and worth the time and investment to bring into your home.

4. A MultiVitamin

Although I am passionate about food being medicine for our health, I also recognize when our lifestyle and routines need extra help. I get this help from a multivitamin.

I do not believe that all multivitamins are equal in quality. Like the probiotics, you may have one on your shelf because it is widely advertised. A couple of key factors I look for when it comes to a multi-vitamin are the following:

  • Comes from a whole food source and not synthetically made in a lab
  • It contains both vitamins and minerals
  • It contains Folate (5-MTHF) NOT Folic acid
  • There are no added fillers or artificial ingredients

We have settled on Mother Earth Labs for our family multi-vitamin.  It contains probiotics, minerals, and detox support for organs. My husband and I take a tablespoon daily and I give my kids 2 teaspoons daily or 1 tablespoon 3-4 times a week.
